Southampton Green Volunteers

We have a rolling conservation volunteering program, which focuses primarily on vegetation management.

In the autumn and winter we spend most of the time on woodland management, such as clearing overgrown areas, coppicing and thinning, all to benefit people and wildlife at the same time.

In the summer we are working hard on removing invasive, non-native Himalayan Balsam from our stream- and riverbanks. Further activities include path maintenance and litter picking.

What should participants expect?

We work in an informal, relaxed environment, with most opportunities being open to ad hoc drop-ins. There will be a short task induction at the start of the session and support throughout. No experience is necessary, although a reasonable level of fitness required for many (but not all!) of the tasks. Most practical sessions last about 3 hours.

Where does the activity take place?

On open spaces, in greenways and parks across all of Southampton.

When does it take place?

Weekly or bi-weekly throughout the year, typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays with some weekend tasks offered. We are looking to expand our offer going forward.

Who can participate?

Anyone over the age of 16 or over the age of 12 with a guardian. Able to follow simple verbal instructions, but staff will be on hand at all times.

Other Useful Information

Most sites are easy to reach by bike, car, public transport or even by foot if you are local. Most of our parks have reasonably level paths, but many of our activities involve work off the main tracks/uneven ground/challenging ground conditions. Please get in touch if you need more information.
