The Friends of Ballard Water Meadow

Walking, enjoying nature, volunteering.

Ballard Water Meadow & Woodland offers the opportunity for a short-level walk on the outskirts of New Milton through a managed woodland and meadow. Benches offer a place to sit and enjoy the natural surroundings. There are volunteering opportunities throughout the year, these include clearing bramble, planting coppices, and clearing some invasive and non-native species.

What should participants expect?

Ballard Water Meadow & Woodland is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and is home to many birds and wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer. The Friends hold a Meadow Day in the summer to celebrate the beautiful wildflower meadow which is open to all and advertised in advance via the website and Facebook.

Working Volunteers need to join The Friends of Ballard Water Meadow and volunteers work Friday and Sunday mornings throughout the year. We follow a management plan agreed with New Milton Town Council.

Where does the activity take place?

The main entrance is from Lake Grove Road, New Milton and on-road parking is available. What3words: sweetly.knees, melons

The site is accessible to all. The woodland has a short-level gravel path usable in all weathers; however, users should be aware that the Water Meadow can live up to its name. It can become inaccessible to wheelchairs, especially in the winter, and boots are advised during wet weather! There are also cows grazing the meadow in the autumn/winter months.

When does it take place?

Open all year round.

Who can participate?

Ballard Water Meadow & Woodland is open to all to enjoy the surroundings.

The work of the volunteers can be quite strenuous using sharp hand tools and working on rough terrain. This should be considered before applying to become a working volunteer. Children would not be able to participate unless they are supervised by an accompanying adult.
